November 5, 2005 - Alaska Snow Teams with Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS)

Alaska Snow personnel and contractors have been very busy this summer, installing a number of new sensor sites in and around Prince William Sound, in cooperation with the Alaska Ocean Observing System. These new data sites include both high elevation, and sea level telemetry sites. While most of these new sites tranport sensor data with SNOTEL's traditional meteor burst comunication system (AMBCS), several new sites transport their sensor data via Starband, a real-time, broadband satellite communication system. Several of these new Starband data stations are also providing real-time weather camera images. New sites installed this summer include Mt. Eyak, Port San Juan, Tatitlek, Esther Island and Nuchek. Several more new sites will be installed next summer. A number of existing SNOTEL sites in south-central Alaska have also been cooperativley incorporated into AOOS.
